When should I replace my brake pads and rotors?
Short answer:Labor Only Auto Repair inspects brakes every 12,000 miles or at every oil change. Most pads last 30,000-70,000 miles depending on driving style and pad type.
Brake pads are consumable — every stop wears a tiny bit of material off. Expected pad life ranges from about 30,000 miles for aggressive city driving on a heavy vehicle to 70,000+ miles for gentle highway driving on a light car with quality pads.
Rotors don't always need replacement with pads. If a rotor is above its minimum thickness spec, has no deep scoring or heat cracks, and isn't warped, it can often be resurfaced or reused. We measure every rotor with a micrometer rather than reflexively replacing them.
Warning signs that shouldn't wait: squealing that doesn't go away after the first few stops, grinding, a pulsating pedal, longer stopping distances, or a brake warning light. All of those mean bring it in soon — brake work is much cheaper before pads wear into rotors.
