Frequently asked

Battery Inspections & Replacements questions

How long should a car battery last in Texas?+

In Central Texas, the typical 12V battery lasts about 3 to 5 years, with most failing on the shorter end of that range. Sustained summer heat is actually more damaging than cold because it accelerates evaporation of the electrolyte and speeds up internal plate corrosion. Cold weather then exposes the weakened battery on the first hard start of winter, which is why so many batteries seem to fail "suddenly" in November and December.

Is it the battery or the alternator?+

A charging-system test takes about five minutes and gives a definitive answer. A healthy alternator should produce 13.8–14.7 volts at idle with a moderate electrical load, and a healthy 12V battery should rest at about 12.6 volts after sitting. We also run a load test on the battery itself and check for AC ripple from the alternator, which catches a failing diode pack before it leaves you stranded.

Why does my battery keep dying?+

Repeated dead batteries come from one of three causes: the battery itself is failing internally and can no longer hold a charge, the alternator isn't charging it back up while you drive, or a parasitic draw is pulling current out while the car is parked. We test all three — a load test on the battery, an output test on the alternator, and an amp-draw test on the circuits — to pinpoint which one is the actual problem. Parasitic draws are often caused by stuck relays, aftermarket accessories, or modules that fail to go to sleep, and they take patient testing to isolate.
