Frequently asked

Williamson County Emissions Testing questions

Does Texas still require a vehicle inspection in 2026?+

Not for most drivers. Texas House Bill 3297 eliminated the annual safety inspection for non-commercial vehicles starting January 1, 2025. Instead, a $7.50 inspection program replacement fee is added to your registration. However, emissions testing is still required in 17 counties — including Williamson and Travis — so Hutto-area drivers need an OBD-II emissions test before renewing registration on most gasoline vehicles between 2 and 24 years old. Commercial vehicles still require a full safety inspection.

How long does an emissions test take?+

An OBD-II emissions test typically takes 15–20 minutes once your vehicle is on the rack. The test reads your vehicle's onboard computer for emissions faults and checks that its readiness monitors have completed — a recently disconnected battery or cleared check engine light can reset those monitors and cause an automatic not-ready result. Walk-ins are welcome, but calling ahead helps during busy registration-renewal periods at month end.

What if my check engine light is on?+

Your vehicle will not pass the emissions test with the check engine light on — the OBD-II system reports the fault automatically. The good news is that the same computer data tells us exactly why the light is on. We can diagnose the cause, give you a written quote for the repair, fix it in-house, and then run the drive cycle needed to set your readiness monitors so you pass the retest.

What does an emissions test cost?+

Emissions test fees are set by the state, not the shop, and we charge the state-mandated fee with no add-on upsell. If your vehicle fails, we'll tell you exactly what it needs and quote any repair in writing before work begins — and the diagnosis fee is applied toward the repair if you authorize it with us.
