Frequently asked

Drivetrain questions

What causes a CV axle to fail?+

CV axles fail almost exclusively because the rubber boot that protects the joint splits open. Once the boot is torn, grease slings out and road grit gets packed into the precision-machined balls and races inside the joint, which destroys it within a few thousand miles. The economical fix is to replace the axle as soon as the boot is torn — by the time it's clicking under acceleration, the joint is already beyond saving, and a failed axle can leave you stranded or damage other components.

How long does CV axle replacement take?+

Most front CV axle replacements take 1–2 hours per side on common cars and light trucks. The job involves loosening the axle nut, separating a ball joint or strut, pulling the axle out of the transmission, and installing the replacement with new fluid topped up afterward. Some all-wheel-drive vehicles and trucks with locking hubs take longer, and we confirm the labor time before quoting.

Do I need to service differential fluid?+

Yes — most manufacturers specify differential fluid service every 30,000–60,000 miles, and trucks used for towing or hauling are on the shorter end of that range. Gear oil shears down and loses its viscosity additives over time, which lets the ring-and-pinion and bearings run hotter and wear faster. A simple drain-and-refill is inexpensive compared to a differential rebuild, which can run well over a thousand dollars on a modern truck or AWD vehicle.
