Frequently asked

Power Steering questions

How much does rack and pinion replacement cost?+

Rack and pinion replacement typically runs $600–$1,200 including a quality reman or new rack, labor, fluid, and the required wheel alignment afterward. Trucks, AWD vehicles, and some European cars trend higher because of additional disassembly and longer labor times. We always quote the job in writing and include the alignment, since installing a new rack without realigning the front end will quickly chew up new tires.

Can I drive with a power steering leak?+

It's technically possible to drive with a small power steering leak, but it's risky. Once fluid level drops, the pump starves and aerates, which makes loud groaning noises and rapidly damages the pump internally. More importantly, completely losing assist makes the steering very heavy without warning — dangerous in tight maneuvers or at low speeds — so it's better to repair the leak promptly rather than top off and hope.

Do electric power steering systems need service?+

Electric power steering systems don't use hydraulic fluid, but they're not maintenance-free. The electric assist motor, torque/angle sensor, control module, and steering column couplings can all fail, often setting a fault code and disabling assist. We have the bi-directional scan tools needed to test the motor, recalibrate the steering angle sensor after suspension work, and isolate the failed component rather than swapping expensive parts on guesswork.
