Frequently asked

Exhaust System Services questions

How much does a catalytic converter replacement cost?+

Catalytic converter replacement typically runs $800–$2,500 depending on whether your vehicle uses a federal EPA-compliant converter or a more expensive California (CARB) converter, and on how many converters the exhaust system uses. Trucks, hybrids, and luxury vehicles tend toward the higher end because of converter size and precious-metal content. We always quote the job in writing and use direct-fit converters with the correct emissions certification so the repair passes inspection and lasts.

Why did my catalytic converter fail?+

Catalytic converters almost never fail on their own — they're killed by something else. The most common causes are persistent ignition misfires (which dump unburned fuel into the converter and overheat it), a rich fuel mixture from a bad sensor or injector, oil consumption from worn rings or valve seals coating the catalyst, or coolant intrusion from a head gasket leak. We diagnose and repair the root cause before installing the new converter; otherwise the replacement fails the same way and the warranty doesn't cover it.

Can I drive with a loud exhaust?+

A loud exhaust often means a leak upstream of the catalytic converter or a hole in the muffler or tailpipe, both of which can allow carbon monoxide to enter the cabin — especially with the windows up or the HVAC on recirculate. It's also a violation of Texas vehicle inspection requirements, so the car won't pass its annual inspection until it's fixed. Most exhaust repairs are completed the same day, and we'll show you the leak before recommending parts.
