Frequently asked

Transmission Services questions

How often should I change transmission fluid?+

Most vehicles benefit from a transmission fluid service every 30,000–60,000 miles, even on transmissions the manufacturer markets as "lifetime fill." In practice, transmission fluid breaks down from heat, oxidation, and clutch material in suspension, and degraded fluid is the leading cause of premature transmission failure. Regular service costs a small fraction of a rebuild, and we always use the exact OE-spec fluid for your transmission.

Is a transmission flush safe on high-mileage cars?+

Yes — when performed correctly with the right fluid and method, exchange service is safe even on high-mileage transmissions. We do not use high-pressure flush machines on high-mileage automatics because aggressive flushing can dislodge accumulated clutch debris and cause shifting problems afterward. Instead, we perform a drain-and-refill exchange or a thermal exchange using OE-spec fluid, which restores fluid quality without disturbing settled deposits.

Should I rebuild or replace my transmission?+

It depends on the vehicle's market value, overall condition, and what specifically failed inside the transmission. Rebuilding makes sense when the rest of the vehicle is sound and you intend to keep it, while a quality reman replacement may be the better value when downtime matters or the rebuild cost approaches replacement. We'll quote both options with realistic warranty terms and let you make the call rather than steering you toward whichever is more profitable for the shop.
