Frequently asked

Inspections & Emissions questions

Why did my car fail emissions?+

Most emissions inspection failures trace back to a small set of causes: a failed catalytic converter, a worn oxygen sensor, an evaporative-emissions (EVAP) leak — often from a bad gas cap or cracked purge hose — or an unaddressed engine misfire that's increasing tailpipe hydrocarbons. We scan all modules, review freeze-frame data, and run a smoke test on the EVAP system when appropriate, so the cause is identified before any parts are recommended. Texas inspections also fail vehicles with the check engine light on or with incomplete readiness monitors, both of which we address as part of the diagnosis.

How much does emissions repair cost?+

Emissions repair costs vary widely based on what actually failed. An oxygen sensor typically runs $200–$400 installed, an EVAP repair is often $150–$500 depending on the failed component, and a catalytic converter replacement is generally $800–$2,000 because of converter cost and emissions certification requirements. We diagnose first and provide a firm written quote so you know the total before authorizing any work.

Can you guarantee I'll pass after repair?+

After emissions-related repairs, we drive the vehicle through the appropriate drive cycle to set the readiness monitors and pre-test it on our equipment before you leave the shop. That dramatically reduces the chance of a surprise re-test failure at the inspection station. If the vehicle fails inspection because of the repair we performed, we'll fix it at no additional charge.
