Frequently asked

Check Engine Light questions

How much is a check engine light diagnosis?+

Our scan-and-diagnose fee starts at $120 for a single related fault, which covers code retrieval, freeze-frame review, and the initial pinpoint testing. Complex driveability problems — multiple unrelated codes, intermittent misfires, network communication faults — may require additional diagnostic time, which we'll quote before continuing. In all cases, the diagnostic fee is applied toward the repair if you authorize the work with us.

Why does the same code keep coming back?+

Repeat codes almost always mean the original repair treated the symptom rather than the underlying cause. A classic example is replacing an oxygen sensor for a P0171 "system lean" code when the actual problem is a vacuum leak, a dirty mass-air-flow sensor, or low fuel pressure. We use live data, fuel-trim analysis, and a smoke machine for vacuum leaks to confirm root cause before recommending parts, which is the only way to make a fix stick.

Is it safe to drive with the check engine light on?+

A steady check engine light generally means there's an emissions-related fault that needs attention soon, but driving carefully to a shop in the next day or two is usually safe. A flashing or blinking check engine light is different — it indicates an active misfire that is dumping unburned fuel into the exhaust, which can overheat and destroy the catalytic converter within a short distance of driving. If yours is flashing, pull over when safe and have it towed; a tow is far cheaper than a converter.
