Frequently asked

Filter Replacements questions

How often should filters be changed?+

Typical replacement intervals are roughly 15,000–30,000 miles for the engine air filter, 15,000–20,000 miles for the cabin air filter, and around 30,000 miles for fuel filters where the vehicle still uses a serviceable one. Oil filters are replaced with every oil change. Driving in dusty conditions, on dirt roads, or in heavy pollen seasons can shorten all of these intervals, which is why we inspect filters at every service rather than relying on mileage alone.

Can a dirty air filter hurt my engine?+

Yes — a severely clogged air filter restricts the airflow the engine needs for proper combustion, which reduces power and fuel economy and can throw off long-term fuel trims. In extreme cases, a filter that's torn, collapsed, or improperly seated lets unfiltered air carry dust and grit into the engine, where it accelerates wear on cylinder walls, piston rings, and the mass-air-flow sensor. Replacing a $20 filter on schedule is one of the cheapest forms of engine insurance there is.

What's the difference between cheap and premium filters?+

Premium filters use denser, multi-layer media that trap finer particles and typically maintain airflow longer before becoming restrictive — particularly noticeable in cabin filters with activated carbon for odor and pollen. Standard filters are perfectly adequate for many drivers, and they're the right choice if you tend to change filters more often. We carry both grades and explain the trade-offs based on your driving conditions, allergies, and how long you intend to keep the vehicle.
