What does my check engine light mean?
Short answer:It means your vehicle's computer has stored a fault code. A steady light isn't an emergency; a flashing light usually means active misfire — pull over and call Labor Only Auto Repair.
A steady check engine light means the onboard computer detected a fault outside normal operating parameters and stored a diagnostic trouble code (DTC). It could be something minor (loose gas cap, small EVAP leak) or something worth attention (failing O2 sensor, misfire, transmission fault). Driving to us for a proper scan is fine.
A flashing or blinking check engine light is different — it typically means active engine misfire severe enough to damage the catalytic converter within minutes. Reduce load (get out of high gear, get off the highway) and call us. Continuing to drive with a flashing light can turn a $300 coil-and-plug repair into a $2,000 converter job.
Auto parts stores will pull codes for free, but a code alone isn't a diagnosis — it's a starting point. 'P0300 random misfire' can be caused by a dozen different things. Our scan-tool diagnostic looks at live data, freeze-frame conditions, and system context to find the actual cause instead of guessing.
