Texas State University is a Tier One public research institution in San Marcos with more than 38,000 students, anchored by the iconic red-roofed Old Main building on Chautauqua Hill.

What makes it special
Texas State was founded in 1899 as Southwest Texas State Normal School to train teachers for the region, and grew steadily through the 20th century into the multi-college research university it is today. Its most famous alum is President Lyndon B. Johnson, who graduated in 1930 and later returned to sign the Higher Education Act of 1965 on campus.
The oldest building — Old Main, completed in 1903 — sits at the top of Chautauqua Hill with its distinctive Victorian Gothic tower and red roof visible from all over San Marcos. Around it, a modern campus of stone academic buildings, palm-lined walkways, and terraced quads climbs the hillside.
The university is now the fourth-largest in Texas, home to Bobcat Athletics in the Sun Belt Conference, and a huge driver of I-35 traffic between Austin, San Marcos, and San Antonio.
