Auto repair near San Marcos River.
The San Marcos River flows crystal-clear from the San Marcos Springs at a steady 72°F year-round, cutting through Texas State's campus and Sewell Park before joining the Guadalupe.
What makes it special
The San Marcos River is one of the shortest major rivers in Texas, but it's also one of the purest. The headwaters bubble up from the Edwards Aquifer at Spring Lake on the Texas State campus at a constant 72°F — a temperature that hasn't changed in recorded history — and support one of the most biodiverse spring systems in the American Southwest.
From Spring Lake the river runs through Sewell Park, past the university's rec fields, and then downstream through the classic tubing stretches locals know by heart — Rio Vista Park with its low-water dams, Lions Club Tube Rental, and the shady bend at Thompson's Islands. The bald cypress trees along the banks have been growing there for centuries.
Between Texas State students, weekend tubers, and paddlers, the river is the beating heart of San Marcos summer — and a reason more than a few Central Texans plan their whole warm-weather calendar around a trip south on I-35.
