About Milam County

What makes it special

Milam County is one of the original 23 counties created when the Republic of Texas was organized in 1836. It's named for Ben Milam, the Texas revolutionary who led the storming of San Antonio in December 1835 and was killed in the fighting. The county seat is Cameron, but Rockdale is the largest city.

Geographically, the county covers about 1,022 square miles of post-oak savannah and Blackland Prairie east of Williamson County, stretching from the Brazos River on the east to roughly the Williamson County line on the west. The economy has historically run on agriculture, lignite coal, and aluminum — and now, increasingly, on the spillover from the Samsung Taylor campus, which sits right on the western edge of the county.

It's a quiet, working part of Central Texas — and where a lot of our Rockdale, Thorndale, and Cameron customers come from.
