Auto repair near Downtown Rockdale.
Downtown Rockdale is a compact, walkable historic district along the old International–Great Northern railroad line, with restored brick storefronts now home to local shops and cafes.

What makes it special
Rockdale was founded in 1874 as a stop on the International–Great Northern Railroad, named for the heavy stone outcrops along the proposed rail line. Through the late 1800s and early 1900s, the town grew into a serious industrial center — first cotton and lignite coal, and later, for almost 60 years, the Alcoa aluminum smelter just outside town that was one of the largest employers in Central Texas.
The downtown reflects that history: solid two- and three-story brick commercial buildings from the 1880s–1920s, many recently restored. Anchors include the restored 1949 Kay Theater (still showing movies and hosting live performances), a handful of antique shops, and the kind of small-town cafes that locals have eaten in for generations.
With the Samsung site reshaping nearby Taylor and Hutto, Rockdale is starting to see renewed investment in its historic core after a long quiet stretch.
