Downtown Hutto is a small, walkable historic district along East Street, anchored by the famous Hutto Hippo statues that have become symbols of the town's identity since the early 1900s.

What makes it special
Hutto's downtown grew up around the old Missouri–Kansas–Texas (Katy) railroad in the 1870s, when the town was little more than a depot, a cotton gin, and a few wood-frame storefronts. Many of the brick buildings still standing today went up in the 1900s and 1910s after a fire wiped out the original block — you can spot the date stones on the cornices.
What makes downtown special isn't just the buildings — it's the hippos. After a circus train mishap in 1915 reportedly let a hippopotamus loose into Cottonwood Creek, the town's school adopted the hippo as its mascot, and over the years residents and businesses have placed more than 70 hippo statues around town. Walking the downtown blocks is essentially a low-key hippo scavenger hunt.
Today downtown is a mix of pie shops, antique stores, family restaurants like the Texan Cafe & Pie Shop, and seasonal festivals — most notably Olde Tyme Days every October, which shuts the streets down for a parade, live music, and the unofficial hippo headcount.
