Auto repair near Downtown Elgin.
Downtown Elgin is a National Register historic district built on the Elgin brick industry, with rows of late-1800s storefronts made from locally produced red brick.

What makes it special
Elgin was once known as the brick capital of the South. The Elgin-Butler Brick Company, founded in the 1870s, found ideal clay deposits in the surrounding hills and at its peak produced more brick than any single facility in the region. That clay literally built the town — downtown Elgin is a National Register historic district composed almost entirely of locally-fired red brick buildings.
Anchors include the 1903 Nofsinger Hardware building, several beautifully maintained two-story commercial blocks, and a handful of barbecue joints, antique shops, and music venues. Acme Brick still operates a plant in Elgin today, continuing the tradition more than 140 years on.
It's one of the more architecturally cohesive small downtowns in Central Texas — and a great stop for anyone who appreciates good brickwork.
