About Walter E. Long Lake

What makes it special

Walter E. Long Lake — known locally as Decker Lake — was impounded in 1967 when Austin Energy built the Decker Creek Power Station and needed a large cooling reservoir. The dam created a 1,269-acre lake surrounded by what is now the 3,800-acre Walter E. Long Metropolitan Park — one of the largest city parks in the Austin system.

The lake is a hidden gem for bass fishing — largemouth, white bass, hybrid striper, and catfish are all routine — and the lack of major development around the shoreline keeps it quiet compared to busier Central Texas reservoirs. There's a public boat ramp on the south shore and a small swim beach near the park entrance.

The park is also home to the Walter E. Long Disc Golf Course and is the staging area for the Circuit of the Americas race weekends just to the south.
