Southwestern University, founded in 1840, is the oldest university in Texas and a selective private liberal arts college based in Georgetown.

What makes it special
Southwestern University was chartered in 1840 — six years before Texas became a state — making it the oldest university in Texas and the first institution of higher learning to be founded under the Republic. Its current Georgetown campus dates to 1873 and centers on the historic Cullen Building, a National Register landmark whose tower has been the symbol of the school for more than a century.
Southwestern is intentionally small: about 1,500 undergraduates, a 12:1 student-faculty ratio, and a liberal-arts curriculum that pulls students from across the country. It competes athletically in the NCAA Division III Southern Athletic Association as the Pirates.
The campus sits just east of downtown Georgetown's square and is a major reason the surrounding neighborhood has the walkable, college-town feel that it does.
