Texas State Inspection: What's Changing in 2026

A quick rundown of what drivers in Hutto and the surrounding area should know this year.

Short answer:Starting in 2025, most non-commercial vehicles in Texas no longer need a safety inspection. Williamson County still requires an emissions test for 1996 and newer gasoline vehicles when you renew your registration. Labor Only Auto Repair in Hutto runs that test in about 15–20 minutes.

Texas overhauled the state inspection program in 2025, and some of those changes are still rolling out. For most non-commercial vehicles in our area, the safety inspection portion has been eliminated — but emissions testing is still required in Williamson County.

What that means for you: when you renew your registration, you'll still need an emissions test (for 1996 and newer gasoline vehicles), but you'll no longer need a separate safety inspection sticker.

Diesel vehicles, vehicles less than two model years old, and certain commercial vehicles have different rules. If you're not sure what applies to you, we're happy to check.

We're a certified Texas State Inspection station and we can run your emissions test while you wait. Most visits take 15–20 minutes.
